The hoodie question on a cold site is not really about the hoodie. It is about what goes over it, what goes under it, and whether you can still reach overhead at the top of a ladder once you are wearing all three.
Here is how layering actually works when you are working outside in the cold, and where a midweight hoodie does and does not belong.
Read this part first: FR is not optional where it is required
Our hoodies are not flame-resistant. They are not arc-rated, they carry no ATPV or HRC value, and they are not compliant with NFPA 2112, NFPA 70E, or any FR standard.
If you are a welder striking an arc, a lineman inside the arc-flash boundary, an oil and gas worker in a hot-work zone, or anyone whose employer specifies FR clothing, wear your FR layers. That includes what you put underneath. A non-FR cotton-poly layer worn under FR gear can melt against skin in an arc-flash event, which is exactly the injury the FR layer exists to prevent.
We sell a graphic hoodie that a tradesperson can wear off the clock, driving in, or on a site where FR is not required. We would rather say that plainly than let you find out the expensive way. Anyone selling you a printed fleece as job-site safety equipment is selling you something they should not.
The three-layer idea, minus the marketing
Outdoor layering is usually described as base, mid, and shell. The reason it works is not warmth in itself — it is moisture management. You get cold on a job site mostly because you sweat during the heavy part of the work and then stand still.
Base layer. Its only job is moving sweat off your skin. This is the one place where cotton genuinely works against you: cotton holds water and holds it near you. A synthetic or merino base layer is worth more to your comfort than any amount of insulation over the top of it.
Mid layer. This is insulation, and this is where a midweight brushed fleece hoodie sits. It traps air, it moves with you, and it comes off easily when the work heats up. Coming off easily matters more than people expect — the single most common reason to be cold at 2pm is having overheated and soaked your base layer at 10am.
Shell. Wind and water. A shell over a fleece is dramatically warmer than a fleece alone, because wind strips the warm air that the fleece is holding. This is why a hoodie that feels warm in the truck feels like nothing at all on an exposed deck.
Where a hoodie is the wrong tool
A midweight hoodie is a mid layer. It is not outerwear, it is not insulated, and it is not a substitute for a jacket in genuine cold. If you are standing still at 20°F in a hoodie and nothing else, you are going to be cold, and no fabric certification changes that.
It is also the wrong thing near anything that grabs. Drawstrings and loose hoods around rotating machinery, augers, drills, or conveyors are an entanglement hazard. Plenty of shops ban hoods on the floor for exactly this reason. If that is your environment, that rule is not bureaucracy.
What we actually build, and what it is for
Our Blue-Collar Pride hoodies are 80% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 20% GRS-certified recycled polyester, in a midweight brushed fleece.
That blend is a deliberate compromise, and it is worth understanding which way it cuts. The cotton is what makes it comfortable against skin across a long day. The recycled polyester is what stops the cuffs and hem going slack after twenty washes — a pure cotton hoodie sags, and on a garment you actually wear to work, shape retention beats the purity of the label.
The trade-off is the one above: a cotton-rich blend is a comfortable mid layer and a poor base layer, because it holds moisture. Wear something synthetic or merino underneath it and the hoodie does its job much better.
Sizes run S through 2XL in a unisex regular cut, made to go over a t-shirt and still let you reach overhead. If you are between sizes and plan to layer under it, size up.
Making it last
Wash cold and inside out. The graphics are printed direct-to-garment, so the design sits in the fabric rather than as a plastic layer on top of it, which is why it does not crack the way a heavy screen print does. What does damage it is high heat — hot washes and hot dryers are hard on both the print and the elastane in the cuffs. That is true of every printing method, ours included.
Line dry or tumble low. It costs you nothing and it is the single biggest factor in how the garment looks in year two.
